Musician Sixto Rodriguez made two albums in the early 1970s. Despite initial hopes, they were commercial flops and Rodriguez returned to obscurity. However, completely unbeknownst to him, his first album Cold Fact had found its way to South Africa, where in the midst of apartheid, it became an unofficial anthem for the country.
Believing him to have died in a gruesome on-stage suicide, two South Africans set out to learn just what happened. In 2013, Searching for Sugar Man won both the BAFTA and Academy Award for best documentary, this is a wonderful, soul-stirring film that's definitely worth a watch.
Tickets, for which there is no charge, are available from the bar in the hour before the film. There will be an interval approximately half-way through.
