In 1965 the Indonesian Army led an anti-communist purge which wiped out more than a million lives. The Act of Killing challenges those involved in the genocide to recreate their atrocities in whichever cinematic genres they wish, including classic Hollywood crime scenarios and lavish musical numbers. The end result is a surrealist vision which not only challenges those involved to reconsider their actions, but offers an insight into the minds of mass killers.
